Diamond Jubilee Trophy – Class 1 Colour PDI

The Diamond Jubilee Trophy was introduced in 1955 and awarded to J D Jones for “the highest number of points for colour slides entered in monthly competitions”.  The diamond jubilee of the Society was celebrated at the Royal Oak Hotel in Stafford.  The trophy resembles an unusual  spoon and is engraved “Progress Competitions Colour Slides”.

Sinkinson Challenge Trophy Class 1 Colour Print

In 1924 Bernard Sinkinson began giving lectures.  Bernard was President of the society six times as well as President of the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) in the 1950’s. He gained a Fellowship of the RPS – FRPS a qualification for his photographic achievement.

Our second oldest trophy is the Sinkinson Challenge Trophy was awarded for “the highest number of points for monochrome slides entered in monthly competitions” or as it says engraved on the trophy “For Perpetual Competition in Lantern Slide Making, 1934”. 

Later, from the early 1970’s the trophy was awarded for class 1 colour prints and has had four layers added for the winners names over the years.  It was first awarded in 1935 to J D Jones when Bernard Sinkinson was President.  Sinkinson was Vice President in 1930 and then five years as President.

J D Jones later won the trophy eleven times, and all three trophies, the Richardson, Sinkinson and Diamond Jubilee Trophy in 1955.  S D Barnwell won the trophy seven times from 1936 and in later years.

Richardson Challenge Cup – Annual Colour Print Class 1

Our earliest trophy is the Richardson Challenge Cup which was awarded for “the highest number of points for prints entered in monthly competitions”. It was first awarded in 1930 to J Weaver and was presented by “His Worship The Mayor William Thomas Richardson” which is engraved on the cup.  Richardson was in his last year as Mayor of Stafford at the time. The cup was later won by J D Jones seven times. Over the years it was had five more tiers added to show all the winners names since 1930. Click for Photo of the Mayor W H Richardson.

Barnwell Trophy – Class 1 Mono Print

S D Barnwell was a member of the Society for over 50 years and held the position of Secretary for 31 years from 1927.  Barnwell was President for two years from 1959 and Vice President for three years until 1964.  The Barnwell Trophy was presented by L Haywood and given to recognize “the highest number of points for prints entered in class 1 monthly competitions”. The trophy was first awarded to L Haywood in 1977.  It is now awarded for monochrome prints. Barnwell carefully collated and wrote the society’s Officials and Awards book from it’s founding in 1895.  Photographs of former Presidents start with H Cliff in 1895.  The First World War years between 1914 and 1918 are blank. Former President’s pictures continue to be added to this day

L F Bowen Cup – Best Print Portfolio

The L F Bowen Cup today is awarded for the “best print portfolio” engraved “Progress Competition Portrait Class Prints”.  L F Bowen won a trophy himself in 1982.

Geoff Ward Cup – Best Print in Three of a Kind

The Geoff Ward Cup is given to the winner of the Print 3 Of A Kind “Best Portfolio Print”.  Geoff won the Richardson Challenge Trophy in 1959 and carried on winning trophies over 20 years

The Harpman Challenge Cup – Class 2 Mono Print

The Harpman Challenge Cup was introduced in 1962 for “Beginners Progress – class 2, with the highest number of points for prints entered in monthly competitions”.  G D Harpman won the Diamond Jubilee Trophy in 1960 and the Richardson Challenge Trophy in 1961.

TWW Jones Trophy – Class 1 Annual Mono PDI

The TWW Jones Trophy was first awarded in 1977 for “colour slide of the year at the annual exhibition”.  TWW Jones won many trophies throughout the 1970’s.  He was President once, Vice President for three years and Secretary for three years.  Today his trophy is awarded for the “annual class 1 monochrome projected digital image”.

Don Adnitt Cup – Class 2 Colour PD

D Adnitt was President in 1964, Vice President in 1965, and President again for three years from 1968 as well as Treasurer for four years.  The Don Adnitt Cup is today awarded to “the class 2 colour projected digital image winner for the highest points for league competitions”.  It is engraved “Progress Competition Class 2 Slides”. Don won eight trophies over twelve years.

Portrait Challenge Trophy

The Portrait Challenge trophy was first presented in 1965 for “best portrait in the annual competition”.  The trophy was won by W A Jordan three times almost in consecutive years

Other Trophies

Former and current members, our own society SPS and Peter Rogers Photographic have donated trophies for distribution over many years.  They are presented to members at the AGM to reward photographic achievement and service to the society for the photographic season.

Inter Club Trophy

In 1971 a new trophy called the Sinkinson Inter-Club Trophy was introduced for “the best panel of prints from Staffordshire Photographic Societies”.  EEPS won this in 1971 with Newcastle Photographic Society winning for the next three years then G.E.C Stafford Photographic Society winning for three years up until 1978
