Competition Trophies and History

From one grand challenge cup first awarded in 1930 for prints, there are now 37 awards presented to winning members for digital images as well as prints in colour, monochrome and nature and include portfolio, panoramic, portrait and landscape genres, three of a kind and service to the society.   • Barnwell Trophy – Class 1 Mono Print

  • Diamond Jubilee Trophy – Class 1 Colour PDI
    The Diamond Jubilee Trophy was introduced in 1955 and awarded to J D Jones for “the highest number of points for colour slides entered in monthly competitions”.  The diamond jubilee of the Society was celebrated at the Royal Oak Hotel in Stafford.  The trophy resembles an unusual  spoon and is engraved “Progress Competitions Colour Slides”.

    The Diamond Jubilee Trophy was introduced in 1955 and awarded to J D Jones for “the highest number of points for colour slides entered in monthly competitions”.  The diamond jubilee of the Society was celebrated at the Royal Oak Hotel in Stafford.  The trophy resembles an unusual  spoon and is engraved “Progress Competitions Colour Slides”.
  • Geoff Ward Cup – Best Print in Three of a Kind
    The Geoff Ward Cup is given to the winner of the Print 3 Of A Kind “Best Portfolio Print”.  Geoff won the Richardson Challenge Trophy in 1959 and carried on winning trophies over 20 years
  • L F Bowen Cup – Best Print Portfolio
    The L F Bowen Cup today is awarded for the “best print portfolio” engraved “Progress Competition Portrait Class Prints”.  L F Bowen won a trophy himself in 1982.
  • Portrait Challenge Trophy –
    The Portrait Challenge trophy was first presented in 1965 for “best portrait in the annual competition”.  The trophy was won by W A Jordan three times almost in consecutive years
  • Richardson Challenge Cup – Annual Colour Print Class 1
    Our earliest trophy is the Richardson Challenge Cup which was awarded for “the highest number of points for prints entered in monthly competitions”. It was first awarded in 1930 to J Weaver and was presented by “His Worship The Mayor William Thomas Richardson” which is engraved on the cup.  Richardson was in his last year… Read more: Richardson Challenge Cup – Annual Colour Print Class 1
  • Sinkinson Challenge Trophy Class 1 Colour Print
    In 1924 Bernard Sinkinson began giving lectures.  Bernard was President of the society six times as well as President of the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) in the 1950’s. He gained a Fellowship of the RPS – FRPS a qualification for his photographic achievement.   • The Harpman Challenge Cup – Class 2 Mono Print
    The Harpman Challenge Cup was introduced in 1962 for “Beginners Progress – class 2, with the highest number of points for prints entered in monthly competitions”.  G D Harpman won the Diamond Jubilee Trophy in 1960 and the Richardson Challenge Trophy in 1961.
  • TWW Jones Trophy – Class 1 Annual Mono PDI
    The TWW Jones Trophy was first awarded in 1977 for “colour slide of the year at the annual exhibition”.  TWW Jones won many trophies throughout the 1970’s.  He was President once, Vice President for three years and Secretary for three years.  Today his trophy is awarded for the “annual class 1 monochrome projected digital image”.
  • zOther Trophies
    Former and current members, our own society SPS and Peter Rogers Photographic have donated trophies for distribution over many years.  They are presented to members at the AGM to reward photographic achievement and service to the society for the photographic season.
